The Evolution of Entomophily and Diaspore Dispersal in Seed Plants, the Reproductive Biology of Basal Angiosperms, and the Development of Beetle Pollination in Gymnosperms and Angiosperms

Gerhard Gottsberger wurde am 30. Dezember 1940 in Judenburg, Österreich, geboren. Er studierte Biologie, Geologie, Chemie, Pädagogik und Philosophie an der Universität Graz (1959-1963). Seine Dissertation (Verteidigung 1966) befasste sich mit der Biologie, Fortpflanzung und Phytogeographie von Myxomyceten (Schleimpilzen) in der Steiermark. Von 1966 bis 1968 arbeitete er mit mehreren Stipendien brasilianischer Institutionen an der Universität São Paulo (USP) und am Botanischen Institut des Landwirtschaftsministeriums des Bundesstaates São Paulo. Ende 1968 wurde er Professor für Systematische Botanik am Botanischen Institut der Universität von Botucatu (UNESP), Bundesstaat São Paulo, wo er bis 1981 blieb, bevor er als Professor an die Biologische Fakultät der Bundesuniversität von Maranhão in São Luís, Brasilien, wechselte. Zwei Jahre später wurde er Professor und Direktor des Botanischen Gartens am Institut für Botanik und Pflanzenphysiologie der Universität Gießen (1983-1993). Seit 1993 hatte er den Lehrstuhl für Systematische Botanik und Ökologie an der Universität Ulm inne, wo er auch Direktor des Botanischen Gartens und des Herbariums (ULM) war. Er war Gastwissenschaftler (1971) an der Universität Nijmegen und Gastprofessor an den Universitäten Vitória (1979), Rio de Janeiro (1979) und Wien (1974, 1976, 1980). Seit 1980 war er Professor und Mitarbeiter am Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA) und an der Bundesuniversität von Amazonien in Manaus. Nach seiner Pensionierung 2006 leitete er bis 2008 ehrenamtlich den Botanischen Garten und das Herbarium in Ulm. Seitdem ist er zusammen mit seiner Frau Ilse noch teilweise für das Herbarium im Botanischen Garten Ulm verantwortlich. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Pflanzenentwicklung, Fortpflanzungsbiologie (Bestäubung und Samenverbreitung) und tropische Ökosysteme.

At the end of 1968, he became a professor of Systematic Botany in the Department of Botany at the University of Botucatu (UNESP), where he remained until 1981 when he moved to the Federal University of Maranhão in São Luís as a professor in the Biology Department. Two years later, he accepted a position as professor and director of the Botanical Garden in the Institute of Botany and Plant Physiology at the University of Giessen, Germany (1983-1993). Since 1993 he held the chair of the Department of Systematic Botany and Ecology at the University of Ulm, where he was also director of the Botanical Garden and the herbarium (ULM). He was a visiting scientist (1971) at the University of Nijmegen and a visiting professor at the Universities of Vitória (1979), Rio de Janeiro (1979) and Vienna (1974, 1976, 1980). Since 1980, he has been a professor and staff member of the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA) and the Federal University of Amazonas in Manaus. After his retirement in 2006 he ­continued as a volunteer directing the Botanical Garden and the Herbarium until 2008. Since then, he and his wife Ilse are still partly responsible for the herbarium at the Botanical Garden of Ulm.

Ilse Silberbauer-Gottsberger wurde am 11. Juni 1940 in Graz, Österreich, geboren. Sie studierte Biologie, Mineralogie, Geologie, Pädagogik, Psychologie und Sport an der Universität Graz (1958-1963) und schloss mit dem Magister der Naturwissenschaften und dem Lehramt ab. Ihre Dissertation (Verteidigung 1965) befasste sich mit Neurotransmittern im Kleinhirn von Wirbeltieren. Von 1965 bis 1967 unterrichtete sie Biologie und Sport am Gymnasium in Leibnitz, Steiermark, und von 1967 bis 1969 Biologie, Physik und Chemie am Colégio Humboldt in São Paulo. Von Ende 1969 bis 1981 war sie Professorin für Systematische Botanik am Institut für Botanik der Universität Botucatu (UNESP), Bundesstaat São Paulo, und von 1981 bis 1983 Professorin am Institut für Biologie der Bundesuniversität Maranhão in São Luís, Brasilien. Nach ihrem Umzug nach Deutschland im Jahr 1983 wurde sie wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Botanik und Pflanzenphysiologie der Universität Gießen. Seit 1993 ist sie wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl für Systematische Botanik und Ökologie der Universität Ulm und Kuratorin am Herbarium (ULM). Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Phytosoziologie und Phytogeographie tropischer Vegetation, sowie Fortpflanzungsbiologie (einschließlich Bestäubung und Samenausbreitung).

Her Ph.D. thesis (defended in 1965) dealt with vertebrate cerebellum neurotransmitters. From 1965 to 1967, she taught biology at a secondary school in Leibnitz, Styria, and from 1967 to 1969, biology, physics and chemistry at the Colégio Humboldt in São Paulo. From the end of 1969 to 1981, she was a professor of Systematic Botany in the Department of Botany at the University of Botucatu (UNESP), and from 1981 to 1983, professor in the Biology Department at the Federal University of Maranhão in São Luís. Moving to Germany in 1983, she became an Associate Scientist at the Institute of Botany and Plant Physiology at the University of Giessen. Since 1993, she has been working as a researcher and staff member in the Department of Systematic Botany and Ecology at the University of Ulm and as a curator in the herbarium (ULM). Her research interests center on phytosociology and phytogeography of tropical vegetation, and reproductive biology (in­cluding pollination and seed dispersal).
