Er interessierte sich schon früh für die Herpetologie und hatte das Glück, das Thema in seiner beruflichen Laufbahn weiter verfolgen zu können. Beginnend 2001 war er fasziniert vom Regenwald und den Fröschen auf der Insel Borneo und verfolgt dort seither Themen der Biodiversitätsforschung. Zu seinen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten gehören zahlreiche internationale Zeitschriftenartikel. Haas führte Feldforschungen in Argentinien, Australien, europäischen Ländern, Indonesien, Malaysia und den USA durch.

Professor for Zoology and Curator of Herpetology at the Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change. He developed an interest in herpetology early on and luckily could pursue the topic in his professional career. He studied at Universität Tübingen and University of California Berkeley and received his doctorate degree from Universität Tübingen, Germany. Mainly trained as morphologist, he fell in love with the rainforest and frogs on the island of Borneo in 2001 and has pursued biodiversity research topics there since. His scientific work includes many international journal articles. Haas conducted field work in Argentina, Australia, European countries, Indonesia, Malaysia. and USA.

Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind die Evolution, Phylogenie und Biogeographie der faszinierenden Vielfalt der Amphibien in Südostasien. Seit seinen ersten Erfahrungen mit Borneo im Jahr 2003 hat er zahlreiche Expeditionen auf dieser Insel geleitet. Außerdem sammelte er Erfahrungen in der herpetologischen Feldarbeit in vielen europäischen Ländern, Botswana und Namibia, Kasachstan, den USA und Venezuela.

He began his herpetological career at the age of six and has remained true to this passion until today. He received his doctorate degree from Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena. His research focuses on the evolution, phylogeny, and biogeography of the fascinating diversity of amphibians in Southeast Asia. Since his first experience with Borneo in 2003, he has led numerous expeditions to this island. He also gained experience in herpetological fieldwork in many European countries, Botswana and Namibia, Kazakhstan, USA, and Venezuela.

After studying communication design and illustration, he developed an enduring enthusiasm for knowledge transfer as a freelance illustrator. After several years of practical journalistic work as head of department for illustration and infographics at the weekly newspaper DIE WOCHE, and GEO, he was appointed to the HAW Hamburg. Since then, he has been interested in the development of epistemic models that use innovative methods, such as 3D illustrations, virtual reality and augmented reality to find new ways of communicating science.
