The Concept of Polymediality

Marios Joannou Elia studied composition with Adriana Hölszky at the Salzburg Mozarteum and musicology with Dieter Torkewitz at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna. He was awarded a PhD by the University of Southampton (2010). Elia has composed more than 75 works, including the opera “Die Jagd” (Stuttgart State Opera, 2008), the large-scale open-air concerts “Autosymphonic” (2010-11) for 290 musicians and “Ulmer Oratorium” for 400 musicians (2013-14), and “Sound of Vladivostok” for 350 musicians (2016-17). Awards include the Lutoslawski and Serocki Prizes in Warsaw, the Edison Denisov Prize in Moscow, the BMW Prize of Musica Viva in Munich and FAMABs Gold Apple for the best innovative cultural event in Germany. He lectures at various institutions, including the Universities of the Mozarteum Salzburg, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Leipzig, and Sangmyung Seoul, and is the artistic director of several initiatives, including the European Capital of Culture of Cyprus.
